Wildflower Planting Day at Sunnylaw Community GreenSpace
Sunnylaw bloomed with community spirit on Sunday, 28 September, as volunteers gathered for a wildflower sowing event that brought connection, care, and soon to be colour, to our local green space.
Originally postponed due to rain, the sunshine arrived just in time for a joyful afternoon of planting and learning. With 14 volunteers, including several enthusiastic children, the event was a wonderful mix of hands-on activity and shared purpose. Led by Leigh from On The Verge, participants learned how to prepare the soil and sow wildflower seeds using a simple, effective method. Together, we sowed a mix of native wildflowers and Yellow Rattle to help transform the area into a vibrant haven for pollinators by next summer and beyond.
The space in front of the bench was carefully prepared in advance, and volunteers worked together to expose soil, sow seeds, and remove turf. The result? A visible change in the field that’s already sparking interest from passersby. With hot drinks, biscuits, and traybakes on hand, the event was as much about community as it was about conservation. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with many asking, “When’s the next one?”
Looking Ahead
Plans are already underway for future planting, seed collection, and collaboration with the Duke of Edinburgh Award. Permanent signage and further wildflower selections are also on the horizon (some are already in place), with expert guidance from Leigh to ensure a beautiful and biodiverse result.
Sunnylaw is growing, thanks to you!
